Small Crack in Axle Center Section...

Not the greatest photo, but I think you can see the crack.

Does this need to be welded?

Thanks, Jason. Is that cast iron? Will it be a big deal?

(It"s going to the shop anyway, to get the pivot bushing removed.)

It does not matter if the part is steel or cast iron. Both can be
welded but the cast is a little trickier but very doable. I think
you need to drill a small hole at each end of the crack to
terminate it (stop the spreading) then get it welded up. Once
you weld it you should be good to go.

I think it"s cast steel instead of iron but I could be wrong. Either way it will be tricky to weld properly. The proper way would be to heat it and weld it while it"s hot and then slowly bring the temperature down on it to prevent any cracks from the stress of it cooling too fast. Second best would be to use a nickel rod and just weld a little at a time and take a ball peen hammer and peen the weld as it cools.

I am currently parting a TO-35.
Currently trying to remove the front axle bolster among other projects. the tractor is just a "Oh yeah, I"m going that direction, might as well as play with it awhile..." When not working on the leaky skylights, fixing neighbors truck to sell, shipping off other parts, and what ever else comes along in the next 7 minutes that I can"t duck. So, if your center section is the same as a TO-35 then I might be able to help.
Email is open on this message.

Yes, get it welded asap and properly. That is a classic fatigue crack, and it is leading to sudden catastrophic fatigue failure.

Thanks, FBH. I"ll get it to the shop soon, along with some other stuff.

Bruce, the two axles should be the same, but I think I"ll try getting it welded first. If that won"t work, I"ll be in touch.
