TO-35 hot solenoid-starter cable

Hello again--

Thanks for the recent help with my solenoid (2tractors, Gearhead210). I got the new one on and (I think) grounded correctly. Tractor started up, ran for about 5 min, then stalled.

When I try to fire it again, the motor turns over once, sometimes twice, then I hear a buzz. After just a few tries (with max 5 sec holding starter button in), the wire connecting the solenoid to the starter--and the posts in particular--get too hot to touch.

The battery is new, as is the solenoid.

Can someone tell me what it problem is/could be re the electrical system? ('ll work on the stalling once I figure out the starting.

(Be gentle; I am new to the tractor world, and the world of troubleshooting even simple machines.)

We will need to know more about the 5 minutes it ran. How was the oil pressure, were you getting circulation in the radiator?

Right now, I'm more concerned with it not starting--I can't even get it to fire up. (The 5-minute run came about a week ago; since then, I haven't been able to get it to start.)

Once I get it to start reliably, I'll take a closer look at the stalling.

The first quick test I would do is attach a jumper cable to the battery positive terminal and jump directly to the big starter wire stud to bypass everything and see if it spins over. Make sure the tractor is out of gear, you don't want to be run over. (I'm assuming this is a 12 volt negative ground TO35). If it still doesn't spin over, I would pull the starter out and bench test it to see if it spins up freely and also make sure your starter nose cone hasn't broken. Also make sure the engine isn't binding up and is free to turn over.

Too hot means too much resistance. For sure, you might remove connections, emory cloth or sand off all parts, remove all corrosion and oxidation, lightly lubricate with your choice of anti-rust stuff, [I like PB Blaster] and reassemble tight. Good tight clean conections will help.
 
Next time it does that...get a pair of jumper cables and hook one side to the ground on the battery and then ground the other end to a good bare place on the motor,preferably close to the starter. I have seen many, many people change starters and batteries when in reality it was their battery cables that had went bad. I even got cussed once when I was in the auto parts business because a guy changed 3 starters on his Toyota truck and it still wouldn"t turn over. I told him to change the negative cable cause it was bad and I got cussed because he said the cables look fine. He wouldn"t believe me that they corrode and break down under the insulation. 6 hours later the same guy came back in work and apologized to me. I was right it was his negative cable all along.
 
I'd get a spare spark plug and hook it up to any of the 4 and ground the threaded portion then turn it over and check for spark. If theres spark then drain the carb bowl on bottom of carb then turn on the gas and check for flow. Sounds like 2 problems and I would bet theres no gas getting to the pistons.
