Tony in Mass.
I would need a chiropractor if I did anything but go down a paved road in third gear. You raked in 3rd for 8 hours? 30-40 acres? wow.
It sounds like it is running perfect, cause all day on less than 5 gallons is great. I guess I am lucky, cause all my gas tanks are clean, either bought them that way or had it done, so I am not so worried about running it dry, but I don't do it on purpose often. If your tank is dirty, there is a point on the sediment bowl screw that leaves an inch after stalling, for either avoiding dirt, or open the valve the rest of the way for a last gasp to get home. I have a bigger problem accidently overfilling, seems over 3/4 full and it oozes out of the cap all over the sides, I really don't like it when that happens...
