Raking hay with a TO30

Just how long will a TO 30 rake hay in 3rd gear just above idle on 5 gallons of gas. We have almost 8 hrs of raking on 5 gallons of gas.Son asked if I wanted to add more gas. I told him to run it out I want to see just how many hrs it will rake on 5 gallons. we ran out of hay to rake and it still has gas in the tank.

craig,

you could not pay me enough money to let the fuel run out on my old TO-35

carb will start sucking all kinds of bad stuff out of tank to keep running.

keep or add a inline fuel filter to your fuel filter system and change it every year.

even with your best efforts, we get dirt and rust out of old fuel transfer tanks/cans, funnels, etc:

I just would not want to run the tractor out of fuel, if I did not have too.
good luck,

+1, running it out of fuel is just asking for trouble with decades of dirt, rust, and crud in bottom of tank.

If you truly want to know this answer. Start with a full tank. When done with your tasks. Fill the tank up again using a measurable type can. However many gallons it takes to fill it back up is what you used.

Same method/principle to check mileage in cars and trucks and best if you can always use the same pump at station so the kick-off pressure is always the same. Even if same pump use is not possible like when traveling across country it will still be very close and any errors will eventually average out if you continually check it.

I would need a chiropractor if I did anything but go down a paved road in third gear. You raked in 3rd for 8 hours? 30-40 acres? wow.
It sounds like it is running perfect, cause all day on less than 5 gallons is great. I guess I am lucky, cause all my gas tanks are clean, either bought them that way or had it done, so I am not so worried about running it dry, but I don't do it on purpose often.
If your tank is dirty, there is a point on the sediment bowl screw that leaves an inch after stalling, for either avoiding dirt, or open the valve the rest of the way for a last gasp to get home.
I have a bigger problem accidently overfilling, seems over 3/4 full and it oozes out of the cap all over the sides, I really don't like it when that happens...
