TO-30 Runs (Barely) Rough

My TO-30 started running really ragged. Seems to pop/backfire and has no power under a load. I was trying to brush hog an area already cut. Plugs looked okay but not sure where to go next. I'm electrically challenged as far as points, etc. Could get help if I knew where to start. Tractor starts okay but doesn't idle well.

I would check for water in gas and check points setting. You can drain carb with plug on bottom, may have trash. Check settlement bowl also, you can see water.

Electrically challenged sounds to me like the condenser has gone bad if it hasn't been changed in a while points and condenser are a cheap and easy repair if that isn't the problem

Larry,
Having similar problems with my TO30. Maybe we can troubleshoot this together. First thing to rule out is ignition. To check your points, remove distributor cap, rotor, dust shield. One screw attaches the points to the plate, the other is adjustment. Check points for pitting. A point file is best to dress them, but I've used 320 grit sandpaper. Turn engine (I bump with starter) to where the points cam follow is at the highest point of the four lobed distributor cam. Use adjustment screw to have a .020 gap (about 2 credit card width). Tighten things up and recheck gap. Of course you can always order a tune up kit and put in new points, condenser, and rotor.

Trac;

My condenser is not challenged--I am!!! I learned along time ago if you don't know what you are doing with carburetors and timing stuff keep the he11 out of it. It's cheaper to pay someone who knows than it is to have them repair what I bollixed up. That's been my philosophy for years.
