Hi, new to tractor restoration (cars and bikes in the past) looking for advice on restoring a basket case TE20 !
Original engine has been stripped and has 85mm dia pistons but rusted solid...been offered a good complete 80mm dia piston engine, less the head...my question is, will the head off my 85mm engine fit the 80mm block or do i need to track down a new head too.
may be a daft question but its worth asking..

I have the 87mm 35 standard bore and have an interest with your inquiry, since your question is with one of the less loved variatives you'll experience what you "may" think is a cold shoulder but believe me there's just not much hands on experience with your model so with nothing to address your problem I'll just say --lets just watch.

I don't know the answer for certain but seem to remember from reading that 80mm had water pump mounted to block and 85 mm had water pump mounted to head. This won't answer your question either but found it interesting.

If you have an early 85mm head without the water pump mounting it should fit your 88mm block. The later head was mostly fitted to the 12 volt tractors but there was an interim period where the later head was fitted with a blanking plate to cover the water pump hole....So the 85mm 12 volt head was fitted to the 85mm 6 volt type block in the factory....The conversion will not work the other way, an early head will not work on a late type block as there will be no hole or mounting place for a water pump!
I have not tried this myself, but I am nearly certain that it should work. But why not free up the old engine?
