TO-35 Clutch

Hi Everyone, I recently rebuilt the engine on my 1955 TO-35 (Continental Z134). While the tractor was apart, I put new friction discs in the clutch as well (2-stage clutch with the cone springs).

Now, the clutch is jumpy as I let it out, not nice and smooth. Also, even though I adjusted the release arms to the right height and set the pedal correctly (3/8" gap under foot support), it feels like the clutch doesn't engage until just before the pedal is all the way up.

Any ideas on what I might have done wrong? Is there some adjustment I can make without taking the engine back off to work on the clutch again?

Thanks for your help!

Did you have the flywheel and pressure plate resurfaced? If not a lot of the time that will cause clutches to grab and be jumpy. There are some clutch discs out there that aren't made as good of material as oem and they will grab and be jumpy even if the flywheel has been resurfaced.

To properly adjust the clutch on the TO35 with Z134 it must be at operating temperature. Then the clearance between the pedal and the foot rest should be 3/4". I have the procedure that John UK sent to me, if you send me an email I'll send it to you.

Phill, Hi, Here is a pic of the disc for my 1955, To35 with a single disc clutch. If you look close the lining on the side facing you is mounted on spring steel plates holding it up off the metal disc, This allows it to slip a little and take the slack out of the gears just before it engages and stops gear noise and jerking. I would think your double would need the same deal. I had to put a clutch in mine as grandpa got the clutch hot and the spring plates collapsed . The gears cracked and a smooth release was impossible. A lot of people are selling a clutch without the springs as they don"t realize how important it is - ed

I like Sam's reply the best! I'll go with that for now. I had not resurfaced the flywheel when I replaced the clutch discs. There were no signs of cracking or overheating, and no waviness that I could detect by feel.

We'll see what happens with a little running. I will readjust the pedal with the tractor warmed up.

Thanks, everyone!

My 56 To-35 won"t release the Pto. The tractor stops at the first stage but there doesn"t seem to be any releasing past that point. It there any easy way to get at the clutch without splitting the tractor?

You could try adjusting the pedal, might be too much slack at the top of it's travel so the pto clutch is never really disengaging. Anything else and you pretty much have to split it. Also check for excessive oil in and around the clutch, youy may have a leaky transmission seal causing the plates to hydraulicallu lock together.
