what is a good solvent to soak a carb. in to get rid of varnish and other crud ?
thanks.

I use wife’s slow cooker/crock pot and line with plastic. Dawn dish washer soap and water. Wait a couple of days . Splash of vinegar to remove rust if you have any. Sounds nuts but it works for me.
I also use a commercial carb cleaner in a dip bucket. Some time lacquer thinner to clean things up first before putting into vat. Sonic cleaning really interests me but getting a big enough one to fit carb into coast a bit.

Toilet bowl cleaner... There is a thread on here where I showed what the carb body looks like after a 15 minute soak in it.

I bought a can of carb dunk from Napa. It works well but I would like to try some of the more safe methods. I've heard that if you have the carb dunk too long it can actually eat through the can and make a big mess. I keep mine sitting in my parts washer just in case.
Crock pots are cheap, I think the wife even said we have an extra one I can take to the shop. I'd rather do that than try to keep her good one clean.
