OT Horse drawn planter question

I tried posting this over at the JD forum, since it looks like a JD planter. But they weren't much help.

At a show I was recently at I saw this horse drawn planter:

What I'm wondering is - Next to the seed box there's a 2nd, smaller box. What's it for?

It's too small to be a fertilizer box. Never seen anything quite like it.

A pea attachment?

So you could plant peas [i:bbd2bb3bc7][b:bbd2bb3bc7]instead [/b:bbd2bb3bc7][/i:bbd2bb3bc7]of corn?

Or so you could plant peas along [i:bbd2bb3bc7][b:bbd2bb3bc7]with [/b:bbd2bb3bc7][/i:bbd2bb3bc7]the corn?

Or if you're planting corn and have to take a pea....

Wait - It probably isn't the last one. :)

I think it was so you could plant peas with the corn because
some varieties of peas are vine type and need a pole or trellis
to run up. So I guess they did like the Indians and let it run up
the corn.
