TO20 or TO30

I have a Furgeson tractor that I am unsure of the Model, TO20 or TO30
The serial number on the steering column is 47725. That sn: indicated it is a 1951 TO20. The steering box looks like it has been replaced with the steering column out of a bone yard.

The engine is a Z129A-6003T SN:2338
Which tells me this is a TO30.

I was told that they Ferguson started puttting the Z129A engine in the last of the TO20s before the official model change to TO30.

Is there any other way to identify the tractor so I can figure out if I have a Frankenferguson or TO20 or TO30?

The reason for the sudden concern is that I have a leaking rear axle seal and I understand there is a diference between the TO20 and TO30.
Is there a way to tell which one I have without taking the rear axle out?

I would like to get to the bottom of this once and for all.

Thanking in advance I am

Is there an air intake on the dash? Is the key up high on the dash or down underneath the dash? Does it have an amp gauge or a little charge light on the right of the dash? As far as the axle seals the difference between a TO-20 and a TO-30 is the 20 axle bearing is lubed by the hydraulic oil that runs in the the transmission and rear end and it has an axle seal at the bearing only. A TO-30 had an inner axle seal in the housing as well as the outer seal at the bearing and the bearing was packed with wheel bearing grease. The procedure for changing the outer seals and bearings is the same for both tractors. The only difference is the inner seal on the 30. If your bearings are good I would just pack the bearings full of grease and install a set of sure seals. Also if you run the hydraulic oil level too high it will cause it to run out at the axle seals. Just fill it to the bottom bolt hole on the dipstick cover.

I read about the sure seals being used on the TO20. Am I understanding you correctly that they can be used on the outter seal of the TO30 also?

Do I need to remove the old outer seal to use the sure seals regardless?

Oh my air intake is not on the dash. It is part of the air cleaner. That is another point that makes me believe I have a TO20 and I got lucky and got the late model motor.

Count the bolts on the axle to center housing. The TO 20 and early TO 30 used 20 and you can use sure seals on these. The later TO 30 used 28 bolts and two seals so you should not use the sure seals on these. This is compliments of John (UK) in the archives.

I learned something today Richard. I didn't know any of the TO-30's used the 28 bolt housings I thought that started with the 35's. If anyone would know John(uk) would know though....he has probably seen more Fergusons that most of us put together. The 30 we had was a 1953 and it had the 20 bolt housings.
