Electrical issues...

I am burning through batteries on my TO30. It has had a previous 12v conversion done before I bought it. My latest issue is hard starts and I actually melted the negative side wire connection. Ideas on where to start looking?

Hmmm, I would start at the wires and all of their connections. Good wires and clean connections.

Your pulling a lot of power to be melting the "-" terminal. Also if you are going through batteries I would check what kind of voltage you are getting when the battery is charging.

You may also want to have the starter looked at and maybe rebuilt.

Melted the neg cable is a DIRECT SHORT. Bad starter? Positive cable burned through on the exhaust manifold? That kind of direct short.
Voice of experience a few years ago and a chebroley...

You gotta isolate from the source by eliminating each component while appling power with the positive cable, first the alt. gets disconnected, then the starter, then the dist. and so on, if you get no spark after a disconnect then you found the problem.

Should this be a negative ground system or a positive ground or does it depend on how the conversion was done?
