My lower chin

How many of you have lower chins that look like this? When I got it a previous owner had filled it full of fiberglass and plastic filler before it was painted. I was going to replace it until I seen the grill was $200.00, so I decided to repair mine.

I think it's because of that hole in the brace. It lets dirt from plowing get in there and moisture too and then it rots. I have already put rust killer on mine and started welding it back together. I hope to be able to post some more pics after while. The only change I may make is to plug the hole in the brace up and seam seal around the brace to dirt and moisture can not get in there again. I haven't seen the new ones up close but I imagine they have the same brace style and should probably have the same thing done so they will not rot out in a few years.
 
Guess what? Our 35 chin panels also rotted real fast...the panel was
double skinned and only spray painted instead of dip painting. I
don't think it ever got any anti-rust treatment at all. When it is
repaired I like to use cavity wax or car rust-prover to keep it good. I
sell a lot of new panels for the British built 35.

It's at the body shop now.

It may not be perfect, but I can live with it, considering the price of a new aftermarket grill.
 
Hey you still got a grill! That is one of the better ones! I think I've seen 2 or 3 ever- that weren't all rotted away down there. I think there was something caustic in the antifreeze back then. The overflow pipe aimed right there....
