points vs pertronix

Just so you know, I am a fan of breaker points. been familiar with them since I got my first Honda 50 trail bike when I was six. When you can get a good quality set of points and a proper condenser they're hard to beat. That's what the problem seems to be, I just can't find good quality points available anymore.
I have a 1954 TE-A20 with the 85mm engine. I've had this tractor for three years and have put seven sets of points in it. The first couple of sets I was setting incorrectly and John UK set me straight, The owners manual I have is for an earlier six volt tractor. I always changed the condenser with the points. I put on a new coil with the correct resistance . I continually got burned points, usually they were burned on the side because they just don't sit square.
I finally decide to put in a Pertronix LU-145 ignitor kit. It took maybe fifteen minutes to put in. The tractor started right up with no hint of a miss and after using it pretty hard for a week or so, it still runs great !! I probably have put about 25-30 hours on it so far and not skipped a beat. Time will tell how it lasts, but so far I'm very satisfied with the results. just thought I'd share my experience.

I put a pertronix kit on my 202 probably 2 years ago and it's been great, no regrets. Quick starts, nice smooth idle, good power and best of all, no burned points!
I've read stories from a few people who don't like them, mostly because when they fail, you have to order a new module, you can't just stick in a spare set of points you have lying around. I think that if they are installed correctly and everything else in your electrical system is in good shape it should last a very long time and certainly reduce your down time.
I didn't get a kit for my TO-35, in opted instead for all new points, condenser, wires, plugs, etc. the whole kit. We'll see how long I'm happy with them for just for comparison sake.

I put in the module and new coil and have never regretted the investment. My TO-30 starts on the first turnover and even on the coldest days in the teens it started rightup without excessive cranking. Best $120 spent on the tractor.

I havent ran them in any of my tractors. I still use Blue Streak points in them, but I did have a Ford F-100 with a Pertronix in it and it was a little over a year it went out and left me sitting in the middle of town. When they go they don't give any warning signs. I put points back in the truck and later sold it but its still running that way. Am I against Pertronix? No, I was just saying when they go they don't give any warning signs like when a lot of other modules start to go bad. That's my experience with them anyway. If I just used my TO20 for grade the driveway or bush hog then I probably would convert it, but I use my Ferguson for all my raking hay, plowing, discing, cultivating, planting corn,etc... If points should go bad while I'm raking 15 acres of hay I can swap them out in 5 mins and be going again. If the Pertronix should go out I would be in trouble because I would have to order another and wait and by then the hay may get rained on. That's why I haven't ever considered switching mine.

I agree if the unit goes bad it will leave you stranded. What I like about the Pertronix is all I have to do is pull it out and put the point plate and assembly back in. It's already set and adjusted so it'd probably take ten to fifteen minutes tops to change back.

That is true, there's nothing saying you can't put points back in if you need to use it right away. And something I don't hear many people say.

You could do this instead .These distributors are good quality and complete . Just pull the old one out and pop the new one in . This way you are able to preserve the authenticity of your tractor and have electronic ignition as well . They are a great fix for a worn distributor with old bushings and worn springs which is half the reason points can wear out quickly. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/110723914992?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649
