Just so you know, I am a fan of breaker points. been familiar with them since I got my first Honda 50 trail bike when I was six. When you can get a good quality set of points and a proper condenser they're hard to beat. That's what the problem seems to be, I just can't find good quality points available anymore.
I have a 1954 TE-A20 with the 85mm engine. I've had this tractor for three years and have put seven sets of points in it. The first couple of sets I was setting incorrectly and John UK set me straight, The owners manual I have is for an earlier six volt tractor. I always changed the condenser with the points. I put on a new coil with the correct resistance . I continually got burned points, usually they were burned on the side because they just don't sit square.
I finally decide to put in a Pertronix LU-145 ignitor kit. It took maybe fifteen minutes to put in. The tractor started right up with no hint of a miss and after using it pretty hard for a week or so, it still runs great !! I probably have put about 25-30 hours on it so far and not skipped a beat. Time will tell how it lasts, but so far I'm very satisfied with the results. just thought I'd share my experience.
