Power steering pump replacement.

Well the old P S pump quit working after many years of not working good. I wanted to buy a new one but the cost and time to get it changed my mind. So off to the salvage yard i go and as soon as i told the owner what i needed, a big smile came on his face. I think he saw me coming as it was not cheap. :( The tractor is a TO 35 with the ZB134 continental gas engine. Are there any other pumps that will fit this engine ? Is there anyway to mount a belt driven and keep it away from the hydo cylinders on the front loader ? I use a " Prince " P.T.O. pump for the loader can it be tapped in to to operate the power steering ? A lot of questions i know but just looking for a way to keep the old tractor going and i do need power steering with the front loader . Thanks Jim. :|

You asked about using the existing loader pump for the power steering. You just need to put a priority flow divider between the pump and the loader valves. The priority port goes to power steering. The balance goes to the loader. The loader will operate a little slower, especially at low engine speeds. You will need a priority valve that will match the requirements of the power steering.

Sometimes, the old pumps... just have old O rings. Nothing to lose, so take it apart and see. If the vanes are too worn, yeah, might not be repairable, but take a good look before you part with a week's pay.
There are repro's around that might not be any more money than a junk yard find, but have a warrantee or are at least...new...good luck.

If you are considering a replacement combination
pump, I would suggest using the Massey combine
pump used in the 410 thru 860 series. The pump
internals are adaptable to either ckock wise or
counter clock wise applications. The flow divider
is built in and the remaining flow is perfect for
the loader. If you intend to always use the
tractor with the loader, front mount the pump with
the crank extension drive. If I were to do this
application again, I would buy or copy the machine
shop fabrication placing the pump behind the
radiator instead of the traditional drive. An
additional flow divider would give you full time
live lift, full time auxillary hydraulic function,
and full time POWER steering.

I designed a system for my 202 using the front mounted hyd. pump and a flow divider. I also used a Char-Lynn power steering valve so it's now fully hydrostatic power steering. There are options, there is a pump made for the front of your tractor, I have one in fact from when I removed the front end loader from my TO-35 (it doesn't have power steering), but I'm not sure I'm ready to part with it just yet. You could also find a pump that would fit your needs from somewhere like surpluscenter.com. I bought a pump from them also for my 202 when the orig. cessna pump wore out. They have a pretty wide assortment of hyd. pumps, valves and accessories for decent prices.
