TO-35 EXhaust manifold cherry red after 30 minutes

I just got my grandfather TO-35 running but after about thirty minute the exhaust manifold and the down pipe were very red, I would say cherry but I am not a mechanical person. What can do checked? Tomorrow I will flush the radiator, put in new oil and filter but I do not think these things are causing the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

its is running lean. check for intake leaks. keep running like that and the valves and seats will need to be replaced.

I would also check the distributor timing- that"s what was causing it on our 135 once upon a time. But, even with everthing right, under a very very heavy load they will start to turn a little red- but not cherry. Pulling a 3 bottom in the evening proved that to me once. Good Luck

Look for retarded timing and/or a lean mixture caused by leaks around the carb metering system. The usual culprits are cracks or rust holes in the intake manifold, leaks at the manifold to head gasket interface or the carb to intake manifold interface or around the carb throttle shaft. It"s also possible the main jet is set too lean. It should not be adjusted less than one full turn from full closed.

......and with regard to timing, don't just look at static timing. If the centrifugal advance mechanism is stuck or inoperable it can cause excessive heating.
