position control problem

Help! I posted a message a few day ago about the trouble I have with my position control/draft linkage. The draft lever will make the lift go all the way up or all the way down. But now the position control lever does nothing. I took the inspection plate off today and have no idea of what I was looking for. I was able to push the roller forward and the lift worked. With the motor running I saw nothing that looked like a leak from the top of the cover. I know this is a long message and I apologize for that. If someone could just point me in the best direction, I would appreciate it greatly.
PS. Its a 1955 TO35, gas motor. Ive owned this tractor for 25+ years, no problem just a little oil burning which I plan to rebuild this summer.
Its only used a few times a year for mowing and light scrapping of my driveway.

Just acquired a 8n with the same M/O and after draining, cleaning, and replacing the fluid I was able to restore the lift to working by pumping the arms up and down. I could hear the pump making a squishing sound and I guess it just has some trash stuck in it.

Thanks for the reply to my problem. I changed the tran oil a few weeks ago. I replaced it with 15w40 oil. It worked fine for a while then all of sudden the mower raised to the top and will only go down by using the draft lever. In the 25+ years Ive owned this to35, Ive never even moved the draft levers. That was o.k. because I don't use it for plowing I only mow a few acres a few times before the California Summer Fire Season starts. I really need to figure this out so I wont have Cal Fire on my back.I tried your suggestion and raised and lowered it many times. Still no position control lever. What about the linkage? Something I need to look at and if so. how? Thanks for the help.

If it is your linkage, it could end up a big job, not expensive, but a lot of work taking the top cover off, lifting straight up so's to not hurt the levers you saw in there the other day, see what loosened or stripped on the top end, just a dragged out job. How about just take the port hole off again and see how each lever feels or reacts as you slide the knobs up and down the positioning arc. Could be just a screw loose?

Could be something stuck in the control valve although that doesn't explain why it will lower when you use the draft lever. The position lever and the draft lever in the end cause the same thing to happen, pushing on the control valve to raise the lift or releasing it and letting the lift lower. They do it though in different ways for different reasons though or rather the input required to achieve this comes from different sources........clear as mud..........I'm not sure why it would go out of adjustment after so many years which would lead me to think something has bent or is broken. It really is a delicate balance which makes it work correctly. If it is out of adjustment it just won't work right. Could also be something gummed up in there. Might just need disassembling, cleaning, re-assembling and adjustment. As Tony says it can be a big job..........but nowhere near as big as splitting a tractor...........It's actually not too bad after you've done it a time or two and know what to look for.
