do I need to use fuel sediment bowl assembly?

hi,I always have trouble with sediment bowl leaking, either the shut off or at the bowl part itself, just wondering if i really need it at all? I have a inline fuel filter and a shut off at the carb, could I just put a barbed fitting right at the tank and then hook up a fuel line at that?would there be to much fuel flow getting to the carb?the sediment bowl seems to restrict the fuel flow to carb.thanks I'd like to hear all your thoughts on this.

Where you doing this job about an hour and a half ago? I was. Brand new TSC bowl, leaked, and didn't seem to have good flow- into an inline filter I decided to keep on there. Took the screen out, cause I know from experience this and nylon gasket doesn't hold gas. With screen out, still leaked. Gasket swollen, so off it went, PO had a small gate valve, and the barb hose fitting... so just like you, that's what it will run with- at least for now. Cork gaskets seem to work better, especially with the screen in place. A bear to make, so got to try and find one- maybe again TSC? I do like the idea that a sediment bowl does one job an inline can't- water trap. Rather have it stay there than the carb bowl. What does Red Green say? 'We're all in this together!'

hey Tony thanks for your reply, nice to know I'm not the only one with this problem,I also went to TSC maybe that has something to do with it?

Some guys on some forums curse that place to death, I just like going there and 'patronizing' the ones near me- I'm kinda exactly between two. Trouble is 'tisco' is the brand EVERYONE carries, so kinda hard to blame TSC...
I never had luck with sediment bowls, always a pain, always my ....'prime suspect' whenever something goes wrong.... but like I said, rather have a water trap in a clear bowl than a year's worth of condensation in the carb...

I've picked up two, I think both from E-Bay, aftermarket, can't remember if they were Tisco or not and they just work as they are supposed to. Don't know what else to say about that. :?

Wow, as soon as I have a problem someone else is already posting the same thing. Went to clean out the sediment bowl on my TO30 and of course the old gasket will not seal. Stopped at TSC for a new one and that did not seal either. knocked the bowl off the gas tank and now I am heading out for a new assembly, I don't think the TSC bowls will fit the old parts.

Anyway, I'm in western MA too, near Pittsfield.

Seems like i heard that the cork gasket needs to be soaked in gas before install but that seems to be what happens anyway with the leak, I always manage to strip the threads then eliminate the bowl with a ball valve which alieves the hunting for which screen is clogged but then I'm caught toteing gas to the field.

That's cause everything in Canada cost so much... even ebay sellers feel sorry for you and make sure at least the quality is there....get a fair loonie's worth?
Yeah, the last one I put on - the F40, was fine out of the box.

Not as far west as Tom, closer to Big E, 6 flags. DanP is in Mass too, can't think of any others at the moment, 68 204? is back east.
I think is was John UK that mapped all of us out one time...

I am not a believer in in-line fuel filters on these old machines -there's already three in place, two in sediment bowl and one in carb inlet. If it gives you a warm and fuzzy, that's fine as it is your tractor so do whatever you feel is right. Here's the problem with the fuel sediment bowl assembly. They wear out -plain and simple. It's the valve stem, not the whole assembly that needs replacing. You can buy just the valve stem separately. They new ones use a vinyl gasket and valve stem seal which doesn't take long for the new ethanol to eat away at. I get a kit with a cork bowl gasket and a new brass top screen, and, yes, soak new cork gasket in gas before installing and throw away the rubber one. Now, just because TSC sells it doesn't mean it is a TISCO part. TSC sells very little TISCO parts anymore -check the package! They try to package them in a similar pattern but you really need to do your homework. Plus, they seem to overprice everything. In short, buy a new valve stem assembly and a cork gasket kit and it'll cure your leaking issues...
