TO-20 Fuel Tank - Repair or Replace?

I"m working on the TO-20, and, as posted earlier, the gas tank has some rust in the bottom, and a loose baffle.

I had been planning to clean and recoat the inside, but from what I"ve read in the archives, I need to deal with the loose baffle.

It sounds like the usual method is to cut a hole in the tank to remove the baffle, then weld/solder the hole. (Then clean, re-coat, etc.)

Sparex supplies a tank that is the correct size and shape, with all holes drilled, even for the toolbox. The best price I"ve found for that tank is $210.86, including shipping.

I"m leaning toward replacing the tank, unless there"s a real good reason not to do so.

Also, if I get the new one, should I coat the inside, right off the bat? (I"ll definitely be painting the outside.)

It sounds like it's not worth repairing the tank i did it once only because it had the screw on cap for the TEA 20 thinking i wanted to keep it (original looking)what a nightmare that was! I would coat it first before it gives you trouble down the road

Personally I wouldn't coat it. Most of the time rust in the tank is caused by a tank sitting with little or no gas in it and the tank sweats and it rusts. As long as you keep gas in it with some fuel stabilizer in the winter time, you shouldn't have any problems. If the tank sealer lets go then you really have problems. I would use tank sealer as a last resort instead of a preventive measure. But that is my opinion

Jason, you are referring to not coating a new tank, correct?

Do you agree that I should forget the old tank and get a new one?

Yes I meant I would not coat a new tank. As far as repairing the old one, that is up to you. I have fixed several but that was just because I didn't want to spend the money for a new one.

Thanks, Jason.

I already ordered a new one - just under $200 bucks, shipped. (It's only money! For more, see my recent post on the Tractor Talk forum.)

If it had been only a loose baffle, and the tank was clean, I would have lived with it.

OR, if the baffle was good, and the tank was a little rusty, I would have cleaned and recoated it.
