Old Ferguson Tractor

most times when it runs only with choke closed,
that means the carb is stopped up.

I would start with a good carb cleaning and quality rebuild kit.

also install a fuel filter (metal) in line to insure you have clean fuel to carb.
note: most old carbs have a fuel filter screen in the elbow that connects fuel in line to carb. be sure to pull this elbow out and check the screen.

also can you still buy non ethanol fuel in your area, most of these old tractors run best on non ethanol fuel.

be sure your tank is clean and your transfer fuel cans are clean, if not after the carb cleaning it will be stopped up again if all tanks are not clean.

never let anyone give you fuel, always use your own tanks that you know are clean

good luck and let us know how it works out.

Thank you for the help however I have checked out those things, taken the carb apart at least 5 times and soaked it in solution for 24 hrs. I've had this tractor for 20 years. This problem is puzzling. Do you have any other ideas I can try?

If you as Maxwell said, soaked out the carb, then
I believe your sediment bowl body is "limed up"
soak that in a quality carb cleaner or maybe just
replace. Also check the inlet screen on the elbow
going into the carb. Chuck

Remove the fuel line at the carb and make sure you have a steady stream of fuel, not just a trickle. Definitely check your sediment bowl and fuel line. You most certainly have a fuel issue so if the carburetor has been completely ruled out then it's a fuel flow to the carb issue.

Try removing your fuel tank cap and then try running the engine. If this corrects the problem your fuel cap vent hole is clogged.

thanks to all. Started tractor and it runs fine with the choke puled full on. When I push choke in, then it chokes engine like the choke is suppose to work. Im going to run it like this for a while, maybe a speck of dirt in carb somewhere, will work through system. I am going to sell, how much should I ask. Thanks

Charles,
it goes without saying that before you start working on a fuel related problem.

you must insure the electric system is all in a-1 shape.

I had a problem once, run a while then stop, then cool down and run again.
it was the coil ??????? just changed the coil and things cleared up.

is the distributor shaft still in good shape, the top bearing can be worn and that will let your points move .020 - .030 I got a new distributor, but if you can find the right guy he can replace that top bearing if its worn.

at this point anything and every thing is suspect.

these tractors are old and so many things can cause you problems.

when you get it right it will idle at 400 rpm's and take the fuel when you sink the plow or disk in the ground and open the throttle.

keep us informed of your progress.

Chas.
You could have a vacuum leak .
To check for the vacuum leak ,While the engine is running , spray some WD40 around the base of the carb , and where the intake bolts to the engine . If you spray WD40 at the vacuum leak , the engine will stumble . You could also hook a vacuum guage to the engine . It is a cheap , and very valuable diagnostic tool . It can point out all kinds of problems , once you learn how to use it .
Some people use either , and listen for the engine to speed up , but either is very flamable , and can be dangerous .
Good luck
I would check for good fuel flow first .

Which old fergy do you have, maybe I missed something. Set the air correctly even though its obviously getting to much maybe sucking in around a bad intake gasket. Eliminate the tank by using another gas source, check the float level, firing order and make sure order is in ccw direction on dist.
