TO 30 Rear Axle End Ply

How much end play will I have on a TO30 rear axle when
replacing it. I only have one side in which might make a
difference but I have about 3/16 of an inch play.

You need to have both axles installed, they butt up against each other in the differential to control end play. You control the play by the number of shims installed at the end of each axle housing. The service book says there should be .002-.008 inch clearance between the butt ends.

Jack up rear of tractor, turn one wheel forward, the other side should spin the opposite direction. If the axles touch, the wheels will spin in the same direction. Notice the clearance spec.

Thanks for the info. I am installing the same shims that were already in place. I will install the left axle and hopefully that should take care of the end play. I did make sure the bearing and retainer were both fully seated. I will check for the counter rotation with both axles in place.

I installed the left axle tonight. End play is gone. When I turn a hub the other side rotates in the opposite direction. I used the same shims that had been in place. Appears things are good. Now the fun of installing the brakes!
