Was it 6 volt or 12 volt from the manufactor ?

What year did Ferguson start with a 12 volt system ? Mine is 12 volt now but i don't know if it came that way , some body had put a 65 ford passenger car alternator on it.

TO - 35

SHM 197273

I think that makes it a 1959 year .

I can't remember the serial number when they changed, but sometime in late 1955 they went to 12 volt on the 35s. If yours is a 1959 then it would have been 12 volt from the factory.

(quoted from post at 06:34:53 04/08/13) They came with a 12 volt generator with a tack drive on back of generator.

Yeah I knew they came with generators not alt. I have a 6 volt generator with the tach drive on it and wanted to use it for the tach. So i was trying to decide to use it and change the system to 6 volt or have the generator rebuilt and change it to 12 volt. My starter is starting to drag a lot and will need to get rebuilt or replaced probably sometime this year. So i need to decide which way to go before spending any money on it. I know how to rewire it , just need to get myself headed the best way. Thanks.

I have an early 1956 (org gray/green) and it has a 12V gen. I am the 3rd owner (bought from guy who only owned it a short time, who bought from church who bought it new). So, I believe it is original.

Can they rewind a 6V gen to 12V?? I think 12V is the way to go.....getting harder to find 6V bulbs and the prices they are asking for them now.

I was told on this forum they can be rewind to 12 volt. I'm going to check at an old shop that's local and has been rebuilding for a lot of years. I can buy a alternator, 12 volt, that has provisions for the mechanical tach drive but it's well over $200.00 . So if i can get the generator changed to 12 volt for about the same cost i will go that way, look more original then.
