Hi -

I have a 1950 TO 30, won"t start. Started and ran fine earlier this week. When I engage the starter with the shifter, I just get a small "clicking" noise. After repeated attempts, the starter, battery cables and battery get really hot. Converted to 12-V last summer, I believe the starter is still the original, I believe the there is a voltage reducer to the starter. Any help or ideas?

Check to see that the starter switch is making good contact. If you have a meter check to see if you are getting 12 volts at the starter. If you are then it could be the stud where the battery cable goes onto the starter. A lot of people will tighten it up without using a wrench to hold the stud while tightening the nut up on the cable, and that breaks the connection loose inside the starter. See if the stud seems loose.

Try to turn the motor over backwards by hand . It is a slim possible that the starter drive is jammed into the ring gear .Turning the motor by hand might unjam the starter .
My MGA use to have a square on the end of the starter to unjam the starter with . They are related ( English ).
Good luck .

Clean and retighten each and every connection. The button on the transmission housing can wiggle loose, and the lever not put enough pressure on it, so check that out too- they are know to fall in the hole now and then, so be careful. Most problems like this are corrossion and time...

If the cable and starter is getting hot you have voltage and current. I would try to turn the engine by hand at the crank. If the motor can be turned then I would suspect a shorted starter.
