Ferguson TO-30

Going to look at a Ferguson TO-30 Saturday morning and would like to know what I should look for in this tractor. I have a 2N and an 8N but have always wanted a Ferguson. The seller told me it has 24 inch rear tires, has been overhauled a couple of years ago and a new clutch installed. What are the good features and bad that I should be looking for? What is a fair price on a TO-30? The Ferguson is all new to me so any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Check the oil to see if there are any signs of water in it, because the are known for the blocks cracking. Check the lift out with an implement on preferably just like on a N series Ford. Although it doesn't have position control like an 8N, the lift should function the same as your 2N or 9N.If it has 24" tires and rims someone must have put them on it which is common but it originally had 28". If it has been overhauled as in new sleeves and pistons more than likely it will have a 3 3/8" Z134 sleeve and piston kit instead of the original 3 1/4" which is also commonly done. It will drive very similar to your N series, although the brake pedal arrangment is different. The pedals on each side behind your feet control the brakes on each side independantly and the one at your right foot in front is the master pedal that applies the brakes to both rear wheels. Horsepower wise, if it is in good shape, there wont be a comparision to your N series. It will have much more grunt especially if it has the bigger kit installed. You really can't go wrong if the price is right.

Prices for a good 30 around my neck of the woods range from $1800 to $2800, depending on condition. Most are in the $2200 range.

I would agree with 2tractors. If you already have a 2N and an 8N I would wait until you found a Ferguson TO35 with a two stage clutch. The live hydraulics, extra gear ranges and position control are very nice to have. Nothing wrong with collecting a TO30 though...I use my TO20 for all kinds of jobs and wouldn't give it up and I also have a TO30. That said, for mowing, snow blowing, position control and anything needing low geared grunt I would want to use a TO35. I use a MF50 for those jobs but a 35 has the same capabilities as the 50 just slightly lighter in the front end.

Del, I"m a poor one to offer advice (since I"m usually the one asking for it), BUT here"s a link to some Ferguson-specific stuff from the FENA website that may be helpful.

Otherwise, Jason is right about the fluids, and the tire size.

I paid $1,350 last fall in Missouri for a TO-20 that didn"t have any major problems - that"s not quite as much tractor as a TO-30, though.

I saw a "fancied-up" TO-20 sell for around $2,200 in February, but it smoked, the hydraulics were moving slow, and it didn"t run as well as mine.

Finally, I"ve read your posts in the N forum here on YT, as well as the "other" N Board, and I think it"s safe to say that you"ll have a pretty good idea of what you"re looking at!

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone that responded with some very good info and other sources of information. The seller is a friend of the family and his father recently passed away and my friend has no need for the tractor. He wants me to stop and look at it and make him an offer, I do not like to do that but because he is a friend I said I would. The reason I asked for help is because I want to be fair with him. Will post a picture if I end up with the tractor. Again, thanks for your input.

If it's good shape, good rear tires, everything works properly, you could pay a friend $2000 and not be ashamed and both of you would be ok.

Tom, yes I went and looked at the TO-30 but when I got there I found out that it also had a practically new Woods 5ft. Rotary Mower and brand new 24in. rear tires on the rear. On the down side it had a leak in the gas tank, needed a new manifold which he had, Hydraulic would not lift and the steering had about a half an inch up and down movement. He wanted a price on the whole package (tractor and mower). Not knowing what it would take to fix it up and the the value of the Woods mower and new tires I told him I was just not qualified to give him an honest value of it and to try and find someone that could give him an accurate price. I told him to let me know if he came up with a price on it and he said he would. Thats where it stands as of now but I think it will probably be more than I can justify paying at this time.
