After the hay is cut my a sickle mower,haybine, disc mower or whatever a person is using, it is left to dry in wide windrow. Some people call it a swath too but I've always called them a windrow. After the hay has dried you go around with the rake and it fluffs the hay up into narrow windrows that kind of sit on top of the cut grass and makes it easier for the baler to pick up. Or if your hay is thin you can combine two windrows together so you have to make les trips around the field with the baler.
