My 57 to35 broke the nose off the starter while cranking. Then the 56 sprung a tank leak where I had patched it so I robbed the 50's starter and the 35 standards gas tank. Well guess what. A standard tank won't fit a to 35. Anybody ever welded a starter back together.

The nose cone is for sale on here for 56 & change. I wouldn't try a weld unless you spent all day prepping and aligning to a couple thou...
if the weld job turns out well, keep it for a spare. That is what the feller I bought the 202 thought, he figured the starter cone was broke, it was, the weld broke, he bought a whole new starter... but the issues were deeper than that part.
As far as tanks go... don't get me started on Standards!!!!!
Actually, the diesel 'almost' started today. It will tomorrow, to drive itself onto the operating table... if a timing chain doesn't stop the smoke.... the back half is getting amputated...
I bet dollars to dunkin donuts a 'petrol' Standard has the same tank as a diesel... but the extra fitting bosses never punched... how far off are the two???
Not the valve cover I hope...

On the standard there's no concave portion where the radiator hose is and it rest on the throttle rod that runs toward the front. Got it bungeed on right now. I was pushing logs on the fire and thought the fine spray from the fan was just the pin hole in the radiator. Lucky to be here!! Running outa cats. Wish we could hear your yahooo when you finally get the deisel fixed!

I think the nose cone on this site fits the after market starters that is sold here. Some time back a fellow had purchased one here and it didn't fit i ended up buying new rebuilt one for $300 i'm real happy with it.

Trac, tell us more. I thought... there was only one starter for any Continental... I took one off my dead 50, that came off a 30? and put it on my 65, no effort... what do the cones here fit then?
Of course, I thought there were only 2 different flywheels until a few weeks ago too... I'm still learning... 2 got to learn to not play with fire! Or Standards....
yep- sounds like a 23c tank to me... can you get the old one fixed???

OK, I admit I don't know how to cut and paste. at all. On the Albany NY craigslist farm & garden is a yellow MF50 gas tank, 2 welded repairs, 100 bucks. The shipping would be more than that! I think you can get yours fixed huh?

Copy and paste.

Lets try this on this mess.

At the end of the sentence above, place the mouse indicator.

Left click and while holding the left button down, drag it backwards across the sentence.

This will highlight all your going to copy.

When it is highlighted, let go of the left mouse button and hit...

"Ctrl" + "C" at the same time on the on the key board. This is copy.

Move the mouse to where you desire to paste that sentence and hit "Ctrl + "V" at the same time.
This is paste..

Have fun!! You just saved a few hours typing...
Unless you use two fingers like I do...
Then spell check works "cause your too busy looking down at the key board to look up to see what your doing worng...

Do you have any idea how your starter nose broke? Starter nose broke last month on the MF50 my brother is borrowing. I wasn't there when it happened but he said the battery seemed low when he was trying to start it. He said it cranked a few times then just quit turning. Luckily nothing else broke when the nose piece came off.

I looked for a replacement on this site but as Trac said it didn't look right for the original starter. I got a new nose from Steiners for 44.95 and it fit and worked good. They sell two types of starter noses: a long and a short one so be sure and measure yours. I had the short one. For that price I didn't want to chance a welded nose breaking again and possibly doing some damage next time around.

Yes the 30 will fit on the 50 or 40 the battery post on the starter is located to the back side that's all.I have an after market starter and the nose wont fit the Delco Remy starter it's 4 small bolts that holds it on not the two long bolts that runs though starter. I had bought a used starter off Ebay for a 65 and put it on my 50 the nose was longer so i had to take off distributor to get it on nose was longer. I think the end bushing on the nose gets worn down then the starter dive hits the flywheel there's to much play on the shaft then breaking the nose it's made out of cast iron.

This must be a 'show us your broken parts day'.
This is the not broken fuel tank, and the .... why???? Coldest day I ever tried to start this dog... and it fires right up (with half a can of ether, but that's a secret) and seemed to be less smoke than usual. Like a cow knowing she's going to the cheeseburger factory? I am going to take off the front clip and install a new timing chain, then experiment with thicker, rather than thinner fuel oils... I don't understand that anymore than I can cut and paste....
Remember when computors first came out you could go to night school and actually ask a teacher and watch them do it??? those were the good ol days...
Anyway, these pics are about 2 hours old. There is a bitter cold endless wind that can't be captured on digital film....

make sure there is a thrust washer on the starter shaft between the drive gear and the starter nose. Check the Ferguson parts manual and you"ll see it in the parts dwg for the starter. It is often left off by rebuilders.

Yes, the thrust washer was still hanging on the end of the shaft after the nose broke. I made sure it was put in with the new nose.

I just hit the left and drag then while the arrow is within the blue I hit the right and copy, then when i wanta paste i hit right again. Don't know what caused my nose to break but i was using a chain to drag logs and switching it on and off often.I'll have to check what Jerry said about the washer as mine was rebuilt.
