trans/hyd oil question

i have a 1957 To-35 ferguson tractor,
It has GL-1 oil in the trans/hyd system, has been a few years since it was changed.

I wanted to check and be sure there is no water in the oil.

Question: if there is any water in the system, how long should the tractor set for the water to seperate and collect at the bottom of the drain?

I want to crack the drain plugs and see if there is any water in the system.

But if the water is mixed with the oil, then i would not get a proper sample.

thanks for your replys,

If it hasnt been changed in a few years then more than likely there is water in it. If nothing else it will be in there from condensation. When you check it on the dip stick what color is it?

If the water is mixed, the oil will look milky tan. You can crack the drains and get water out to some extent even if mixed somewhat as much would be concentrated at the bottom. I think condensation perhaps would be worse with big temp swings, but that is an interesting question. Your tractor takes 8 gallons, which is very expensive, so if you can drain out most of the water that is a good thing. A little water doesn"t affect the operation, but of course too much in cold weather could freeze.

On the dipstick the oil is clean, no sign of milky discolored oil.
the tractor always is stored inside and the shifter boots are in good condition.
moisture would come from the housing sweating, but I was just concerned that moisture could buildup over a long period of time.
this is the only time of the year that I am not using it at least ever few days, so I thought it might be a good time to drainout a bit an check for water.

Might drain and change the trans/hyd fluid this year as it has been at least 5 years since it was changed.

Unlike engine oil, if isn't milky, it won't go bad. As I said, it's expensive to replace, and not friendly to the environment either.
