Hydraulic Fluid

I inherited a 42 Ferguson TE20 from my father. The hydraulic fuild is low and will not allow it to lift the bucket. I was told not to use modern hydraulic fuild as it would damage the seals. Is this true and if so can you tell what I should use and where to purchase the fluid? Thank You

Modern fluid will damage the yellow metal in the transmission, not the seals. Originally it was specified to use a SAE90 GL1 mineral oil. Which you can buy at NAPA in 5 gallon buckets, or you can go to a TSC and get the Ford hydraulic mineral oil for older tractors in 2 gallon jugs. If you are going to use the tractor much in colder weather you can use a 10w30 motor oil in the hydraulics, which flows much better than the SAE90 in cold weather which means the hydraulics will work much faster and offers the same protection in hot weather. It's your choice which one to use.

"42 Ferguson TE20"

Can't be a '42 as they weren't produced until 1947. You can research serial numbers in the left column:

"The hydraulic fuild is low and will not allow it to lift the bucket."
Are you talking about a front end loader or the three point hitch on the back of the tractor?

Ah Richard.........

Only one TE20 was produced in 1946 and I know Daniel doesn't have serial number 1, so for him production commenced from 1947.

Bob according to the serial numbers there were 315 produced in 46, 1947 first number is 316. I really would not have gotten that picky if there was only one made in 46. LOL That is just like the 5 TO 35s made in 1954.

Bob, I would hate to guess how many times I have been wrong and you have been caught in one small mistake plus you have been on this forum longer than I so I will have to say you are way ahead of me.

It is to bad that people post a problem then don't come back to let us know if anyone's reply helped or not.
