TO-30 stalls when hot

Starts and runs fine for about 15 minutes or so - then stalls. Have cleaned points & replaced condenser. Cleaned out the carb. If I pull out the choke, the engine keeps running but has no power... can barely get the tractor back home by playing with the choke. Any help welcomed!

It is starving for fuel, check sediment bowl or any other filter you may have in the fuel line. Sometimes dirt will settle out once the tractor is stopped for awhile and the fuel will flow until you start using it then the dirt becomes mobile and lodges itself to block fuel flow. Failing that, clean the carb again, soak it real good in carb cleaner.
Any time you have to choke it to make it run it's a fuel problem.

Also check that your float level is set correctly .

Fuel can be a problem no doubt. I had the same issue with a Ferguson 35. It was not a fuel issue, the issue was anti-freeze was getting into the cylinders as a result of a cracked block. Would run for a while but once fluid got in the cylinders it would kill combustion. This was the tractor that got me started on parting them out. Couldn't find a block to fix it at that time.

I guess that would be a worst case scenario but entirely possible. Although there would be other symptoms along with that. If it were getting anti-freeze into the combustion chamber you would see white smoke before it shut down and probably any time it was running.

Wow... that was quick! Thanks for the feedback. No smoke when it stalls, so I will check the sediment route... change filters and blow out all the lines. Will let you all know.

Mine did the same thing it was in the tank screen. I would pull the bowl assy and see how the screen looks ,

If you pull the sediment bulb, fabricate some sort of funnel/gutter to catch the gas and divert it into a couple of clean 5 gallon buckets. Although you tank may look empty or low.......I am always surprised by how much (and rapid) the gas flows when the sediment bulb is taken off.
I have to do this each spring-well dont have too- but an excellent spring tune-up habit. I twist a very small drill by BY HAND and pull the crap up out of the tubes. then soft compressed air.

I've had several times where the gas was just plain low in the tank and when I drove around the ol girl just wasnt gettin' enough juice. Another 5 in her belly would do the trick. just a little extra thought

I've had to clean out the tubes in the sediment bowl on several Ferguson tractors. On one, the sediment bowl had begun to dissolve and the pot metal was clogging the tubes. I threw that sediment bowl away, needless to say. I never knew why it had started to dissolve.

If you are using an inline fuel filter make sure it's not an automotive type which "expects" there to be pressurized fuel there, they don't work too well with gravity feed systems. There was recently a discussion on this topic over on the Massey Ferguson forum.

It starts , and runs until it is hot ? It could be a vaccuum leak . Can be checked with a vaccuum guage . A real handy tool when you learn how to use it .
Could also check using WD40 . Spray along anywhere that there is a gasket in intake system . Motor will cut out when you spray the wd40 on the leak .
Can use ether the same way , but can be a little dangerous . Engine will speed up when you spray on the leak .

Start your tractor up, let it run til it stops and imediately check for spark. If you don"t have one, or if it"s yelloweidh or reddish blue,then the ignition system is your problem. the spark has to e FAT AND BLUISH-WHITE, the color of lightning.

If you have a 12v electrical system, do you have a coil with ~3.2 ohms primary resistance? If you have a ~1.6 ohm coil on a 12V system, you maybe overheating the coil and causing it to internally short.

Do you have adequate fuel flow to the carb? Remove the plug from the bottom of the fuel bowl, with the tank valve wide open. You should have a CONTINUOUS gush of fuel. If it dribbles or is intermittent, you have a restriction in the fuel delivery system. Start at the fuel inlet elbow on the carb, checking the screen there. the check the flter in the sediment bowl. Then check the inlets to the tank valve and finally make sure the the cap vent is clear. If you don"t find the problem there, you"ll have to remove the carb and check the float valve and the flaot pasae for blockage.

Do these checks systematically and check by starting and running anytime you find some thing wrong and fix it.

I've switched all four of my fergys to inline filters an eliminated the numerous other filters and have had no problems with flow. With the original setup you won't know which one is clogged.

Solved!

Replaced the fuel filter and cleaned out the lines - one particular section was badly clogged up. Just ran the tractor under load for about an hour - smooth as silk

you are so right. when the gas is low they wont run hardly. my to-20 done that to me a few times before i figured out what was wrong. lots of trouble

You should be able to run the tank dry if your filters/screens are all clean. If it starts giving you trouble before the tank is empty I think that is probably a sign of things to come or advance warning to give it some attention.

Check the exhaust pipe to manifold connection. Sometimes leaking exhaust causes overheating.
