TO-35 steering column

Hey yall, just bought a TO-35 loader/backhoe, but the steering column was missing. I'm having trouble locating the parts; does anyone have advice for parts interchange?

sorry for the lack of URL links, the board wouldn't let me post a URL link because I'm new here

I found a similar piece for other models, these are the closest:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MASSEY-FERGUSON-PARTS-MF-50-STEERING-COLUMN-COVER-/271134434226?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f20df23b2
http://www.ebay.com/itm/STEERING-BOX-COLUMN-TUBE-Massey-Ferguson-240-135-UK-1863357M93-1863357M94-/300785961276?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item46083d893c

But not sure of the interchange?

I did find the entire shifter assembly for a TO-35, but that was $425

and for that much money, i'd be tempted to just get a parts tractor for $500:

But again, not sure if the MF40 would interchange

Thanks in advance!

So which parts are you missing? I might be able to help you out with some of them from my 202 although I'm not entirely sure they would match. Did your TO35 have power steering?
The first two you listed do not match up with your tractor.
For some reason I noticed the price went way up on the steering shaft itself (worm screw type). I seem to remember paying about $250 or so a couple years ago and now they're over $500 on this site.
You might be better off to try and find a tractor for parts rather than trying to buy all the parts individually, it can get costly real quick!
As far as what components interchange, the answer is that it depends.
Other than the steering column, what else is the tractor in need of? Some pictures would probably help.
With a front end loader you're going to want power steering for sure, mine came with it removed/broken and I was breaking steering parts all the time.

Also, have a look at agcopartsbooks.com and click to sign in as guest. From there find your tractor model and you can look at exploded parts diagrams and part numbers. That will make searching a little easier.

it's manual steering. I know the first two links were for other models, just not sure if there was enough similarity, or if that would be case by case. If I have to spend $425, i would rather just get a parts tractor as well, but the closest one I found was an MF 40, so not sure how similar that is to the TO-35

The webiste looks cool, i will have to look into that more. I could only find a Massey Ferguson 35 model (not sure if that is the same, but looks like it). If it is then I need part number 180524M91

The $425.00 Steering box on E Bay is one of my litings. This item is offered at this price with free shipping and crating. The cost of shipping alone will be 60.00 plus the cost of building a wooden crate to ship it in so UPS doesn't break it.

I offer a 10% discount for buyers who pay via US Postal Money, Pay Pal Order or credit card by phone. This is the overhead factor for selling on E bay less credit processing.

I would highly recommend power steering for use with the front end loader, otherwise you simply won't be able to steer it when the bucket is full of material. And as I said before the potential for breaking parts is huge. The TO-35 is not exactly built for front loader use, fairly light duty front end. I have a TO-35 which did come with a loader but I took the loader off. I also have a 202 which is the industrial version of a 35 (for lack of a better explanation) and it has a much beefier front end.

Hey, sorry just realized I didn't upload the image correctly

@external_links, Although it seems expensive to me, i'm new to old tractor parts, so not used to the prices. Really I just don't need that whole assembly, and similar pieces seem to go for $50-100

@Inno, I would love to do power steering, but as you can probably guess I'm trying to keep expenses to a minimum. Seems like power steering is in the $5-800 range? Seen a few parts here and there, but correct me if I'm wrong. I know PS would def be nice, but for the time being I won't be using it enough to justify. Also it beats the hell out of a shovel and wheel barrel, so I'm not worried about the workout

Ok, the picture helps. You have most of the expensive stuff so that's great!
I have the piece you need but it's from a 202. I will try to figure out if there is any difference between it and the one on the TO35. Luckily my 35 is all apart in the shop right now and the old parts from the 202 are also there. Might not be this evening but within the next day or so I will have a look.
The price for the whole assembly is quite good actually when you consider the price of new aftermarket parts but you're right, you probably don't need the whole thing

Do you have the steering wheel etc? What kind of shape is the rest of the tractor in?

Yes, i have the steering wheel, nut, and like a rubber dust cap (goes below the wheel, above the dash to cover the hole), in addition to what you see. From the AGCO diagrams and other pictures I've seen, looks like I will need the column, bearings, spring, and maybe a few other small parts?

I measure about a 4.5inch square bolt pattern on the base, and length should be around 14.5 inches (give or take, just guessing on how high the column should go). Let me know what you find with your stuff

Tractor is decent, all hydraulics work fine, but have leaks here and there. Body is good for 60+ years old, although not showroom, but looks soo pretty to me! Looks like the loader and front axle have had some weld repairs, but it's not anything I'm worried about now.

Not that it matters much, but I've got a spetic drain field issue that is a priority, so I'm looking to get operational so I can do that, but once that's done I'll have more time/money to fix it up

Thanks Again

Took the steering column apart some today...steering shaft looks good and tight, although the lower bearing is shot. Also found 10 extra rollers down there, possibly from a shot upper bearing?? Yall say the manual steering can fail, Are the bearings typically the culprit? there is a little chip in one of the teeth on the pitman-arm shaft (see second pic), although it doesn't look like a problem and it's just on the one tooth; the pitman shafts appear good and tight. Just wanna make sure I get all the parts I need

Also found a piece i don't recognize; its in the picture, the thin washer piece with a rivot. Just wondering where that may have come from

In some more searching around for interchangeability, it appear's the TO-35 is the only model that will have the steering column I need; the TO-30's and MF 40/50's both look different.

The shaft from my 202 had power steering so it would have to have the steering valve installed
