PTO Shaft Cap - No Threads in PTO Shaft Cover?

A while back, I purchased a PTO shaft cap from this site, but today I just got around to removing the ORC so I could put the cap on.

The Problem: the PTO Shaft Cover doesn't have any threads for the PTO Cap to screw into!

It doesn't look like threads were damaged, or worn off - it just looks like there were never any threads in the shaft cover to begin with.

Any ideas?

I bought a cap and had problem getting it to start.I cleaned threads with Berryman and just pushed hard on cap to get it to screw in. At first I thought it was the wrong size.

Miner, that"s what I thought I had, so I cleaned/brushed out the inside of the PTO shaft cover.

Now it"s clean as a whistle - but still no threads!

It looks like a 1 3/8" shaft, which I think means that it"s a replacement. Could it be that the cover for the new shaft just didn"t come with threads for a cap?

Either it didn't ever have threads or a pto shaft
collar has worn them smooth.

I had same problem with 8N Ford. ORC was loose (worn in both ORC and PTO shaft). The loose ORC had worn down the internal threads on bearing holder so protective cap would not screw on.

I replaced the bearing holder to cure the problem.

That must be what happened with mine, Virgil.

The current ORC fits fine, so it must have happened a while back. (I"ve only had the tractor for a few months, and I haven"t had the PTO hooked up to anything yet.)

I have a little drip from the PTO shaft/seal, so I"ll be replacing the seal - I can put on a new cover/bearing holder "while I"m at it."

The universal joint on the tractor end was not located properly and it slid forward and it will be this that has worn away the threads. It can also be caused by the PTO shaft being tight and not telescoping properly and this will force the front U/J forward and it wears the housing then. Be sure to thoroughly clean both halves of the PTO shaft so they telescope easily, don't use any oil or grease as that will collect crud and make it even harder. If the shaft doesn't move easily it can also pull the shaft out of the tractor as well as force it right in.. John(UK)[email protected]

I found a good photo of the PTO shaft cover on another site (couldn"t find one offered at YT), and mine has no threads where they should be. (From the photo, it looks like the internal threads should be nearly out to the edge of the cover.)

How difficult is that cover to change? I have the Shop Manual, but it doesn"t always tell the whole story.
