Yes I really do use toilet bowl cleaner for carbs. It's $1.00 a bottle and makes that cast iron and brass look new. This one actually set with water in it it was rusty and scaly real bad.

I'm intrigued, tell me more about your method. Do you put it in straight cleaner or mix with water? The after picture, did you have to do any brushing/scraping? I recently discovered carb soak but it's fairly pricey, if I could do much the same thing with toilet bowl cleaner that would be great.

All I do is buy 4 or 5 squirt bottles of toilet bowl cleaner. I then pour all of it into a plastic container. Then I submerge the disassembled carb halves in the acid. You will see it start to bubble in a few minutes and after about 15 mins I pull them out and check them. Depending on how bad it is it may need a longer soak. After it is clean enough i rinse it really well with water. Then I wash it again with a degreaser and rinse and then I spray it with a little wd40 to prevent flash rust. The pics below are as it was before and then what it looked like after 15 mins in the acid and a rinse. It had no scraping or wire brushing done to it in the pics. That's straight out of the acid and a rinse.

Muriatic acid (hydrochloric) will remove rust from cast iron very well. Just a couple of precautions to follow.1. Don 't leave the part in the acid very long. Cast iron is porous and the acid is very active on cast iron unless the acid is inhibited. 2. Make sure once you are done to neutralize the acid on the part in a baking soda/water solution to. Happy Cleaning!

No...I usually buy the generic brand. It will say either 16% or 20% hydrochloric acid. Which means make sure there isn't any aluminum on your carb or you will have a bad chemical reaction,it will foam up and cook the aluminum. I did another one just a second ago and took before and after pics I'll post. It needed a little longer to soak when I took it out but you can see how well it works.
