I am looking for the cause of my oil pressure loss when hot. I pulled the oil pump and found all the screws have damaged heads. I cannot turn them. Did a previous owner try, fail, and leave them this way?

What should I try?

Related. After pulling this off I tried to remove the bearing cap so I could check the clearance. That cap doesn't want to come off. Before I damage anything, is there something I'm missing.

Middle bearing, about .003. Rod bearings all between .0015 and .0025. Haven't checked rear main yet.

Oil pressure dropping when warm is generally caused by worn bearings. Rods and Mains specifically. Oil pressure can be raised with new bearings or possibly raised a bit with thicker oil. Once the engine warms up, clearances expand and oil pressure drops off.

Low oil pressure can becaused by a worn pump, a stuck open relief valve or worn bearings. You need to check all three.

take a punch and hammer the screws in a ccw direction until they break loose. find some new screws and if they're not the right length then add a nut then cut them off. a fastenal store may have them. The relief valve piston needs to move freely in it's cylinder, probably not the prv as if it is stuck open or closed the heat wouldn't make much difference. Make sure the thermostat isn't stuck or the radiator clogged.

Hammer, chisel, and time eventually turned all the screws. I replaced them so I or whoever is next in line doesn't have the problem again.

Manual says backlash inside shouldn't exceed .007. Given the slop in the gears I assume the pump is at least part of the problem with my oil pressure while hot. But then again, I'm not exactly sure how to measure backlash. Is there a proper way to measure backlash with basic equipment?

measuring the backlash is tough to do. Just go ahead and rebuild
that pump. The rebuild kit on this site works well. The relief valve is
often the problem. The rebuild kit includes relief valve parts. A
good pump will overcome some bearing wear and provide good
pressure. Also consider using 20W-50 oil.
