Standard Diesel Rebuild

My 1958 TO-35 with the 20C has over 4000 hours. It
puffs smoke and has blow-by through the dipstick
tube. Seems like it"s time for a rebuild. I"m
quite capable of rebuilding engines (cars,
specifically - I"ve done 3 of "em and they are
still going....)

Anybody have any recommendations? I"d typically
disassemble it then have it machined based on it"s
wear. Are there any things that I should look for?
Is it possible for me to just do a re-ring and get
away with just that?

I know very little of these engines and don"t want
to get into anything that"s beyond my abilities.
(The diesel scares me because of the injector
timing)

Thoughts from the more experienced?

Thanks in advance!

Graham

Your tractor will have the 23c diesel...only the TEF20 had the 20c diesel.
I would fit new liners and pistons/rings as compression is very important on these tractors. A new timing chain and tensioner is also important. Check also the bush on the drive to the injector pump for wear, though at 4000 hrs it should be OK. The liners in these engines are real easy to pull and fit, they are actually always loose-ish and the crank has to be one of the toughest about, it should not need reground at 4000 hrs But then I haven't seen it! Email me if you are real stuck for parts, or need any help.

You're in Jersey?? Could you claim hurricane Sandy damage? Collect insurance and push it into the low tide?
If not, the whole kit is for sale in the left column, might have just rings and sleeves, I did mine 18 months ago.... something went terribly wrong on the operating table, hey it was scrap iron before I took the chance, but alot of time and money. If rings is all it needs, go for it. Do a search of archives on this forum, my project was posted in stages between May and Nov '11.

Don't even think about wasting time and money fitting only rings to this engine (23C) You should fit Sleeves and Pistons, Have the Injectors serviced as the hoes tend to block and the cold start suffers. Grind-in the valves, replace the Timing chain tensioner. To improve the starting, it can be improved by opening up the hole in the Head to the combustion chambers. The Fuel Injection Pump timing will need checking as the drive gears wear and alters the timing, this does need to be correct When you carry out most of this work you don't touch the Injection Timing at all, it is only when you come to set the Pump timing and you can do that or leave it and do it later, but don't expect miracle cures unless you do everything listed..John(UK)[email protected]

Thanks for the helpful advice. I did some searching per Tony's suggestion. Seems that the 23C is, well, not so good? At least compared to the Perkins?

Other than the smoke, I find mine to be a good starter and runner. A light shot of ether below 60 degrees and she fires right up.

Of course after I'm done with the rebuild, I guess I'll have to giver her a fresh coat of paint! And new rod ends. Tires too, oh and a new seat cushion and that rusted out wheel rim......
