TO-35 Reassembly (sort of)

I wanted to make a reassembly thread and I guess this is sort of the start of it. I received the rest of my parts and proceeded to put the valves back in the head, that all went well. Then I set to work cleaning off the top of the block and getting any accumulated crud out of the cylinders etc.
Then I removed the manifold which was still attached to the tail pipe because of rusted nuts. When I got it off it felt kind of loose. The intake section where it mounts to the exhaust section was broken on one side, looks like the casting let go eons ago. Well because I just can't leave well enough alone I figured the only way to get in there and fix it was to break the other side so I can get in and clean up the area and find someone who can weld cast............so here's where it is.

A garage? You are in a garage? Isn't that cheating or something?
I use the scotchbrite things that screw in the angle grinder for cleaning the head and valves, amongst other off the wall tools. I have a Bridgeport, so that presses the valvesprings nicely. I don't know if it is your camera or my glasses... but I don't see a crack in the manifold... those tabs? I didn't think they even left the foundry in one piece.... I thought they just stuck themselves together with time. Really 'has' to be welded back? If your man doesn't get it right spot on, it will not be airtight on the block...then have to be surface grinded flat etc etc oh just pretend there is nothing wrong....
must be nice to have a garage...jeeezzz
 
Wasn't going to gloat about that but I can't see myself ever engaging in this "hobby" without it. It's currently 5°F outside. But it was a balmy 72° in the garage. If it wasn't here when we bought the place I probably wouldn't have one............we'd probably have a much nicer barn first.

As regards the "tabs"......I probably should have just ignored them. My thought was to get the areas to be welded prepped then bolt it to a heavy piece of flat stock. Although now that you mention it, when it's bolted back in place all the intake ports will line up and all the exhaust ports will line up so maybe it's not such a big deal. I think the trickiest part will be to line it up properly over the ports to get it snugged down.
 
Do not waste time welding manifold.
just get a new one
Many times they break again after welding an a lot of work
to replace it a second time.
 
My work space (26x40) started as a pole barn about 12 miles away. The farmer gave it to me to tear down for the lumber then he also had telephone poles that i bought for 100 dollars. Later came the concrete floor and the siding.It's got a loathe with a pool table, no heat, no more space.
 
Don't waste your time welding that manifold as it will never be flat and will keep blowing between the gasket and the Head and may also break again where the Exhaust attaches....John(UK)
 
I have 1 of the original Z134 Manifolds in stock. Many of the aftermarket manifolds are poorly cast and require die grinding just to be able to install the nuts that hold it on.
I bought one of these bargain manifolds thinking I was getting a great deal. So poorly cast that when i finally ground enough material off tho fit the nuts I went right through it. Shipped back for a refund. Buy an original, fixing the old one will be nothing but problems. It just get too hot there for a weld to hold.
 
Yup, I had the same experience with the same manifold on my 202, I was able to get it in place and it does work but what a pain it was to grind down all the areas where the casting was bad.

How much for the manifold you have? Is it new old stock or a used part?
 
I haven't decided yet if I am going to replace it or not. Really they are two separate manifolds which join together so I think I'm going to try and line it up, possibly with the head off the tractor and bolt things on securely and see if I can't make it work.
If I do need to replace it I will definitely purchase that one from you rather than an aftermarket. I was very frustrated with the last one I put on my 202. Thank you.
