1951 H. Ferguson

I have a Ferguson issue. I think my tractor is a TO-20 (it resembles a 9N and has similar power). The problem involves fuel dumping into the carb. and crank case. It nearly fills the air tube running to the carb. Any thoughts.

Sounds like gas overflowing through the carb and into the air supply tube. Could be due to carb float level arm too high which otherwise temporarily shuts off the gas supply when the tractor is running so the tractor gets only the gas it needs to run. If thats the case it requires adjustment. Maybe start by a search through the archives in this forum using search words of how to adjust a TO 20 float level Also if the tractor is not being used it's best practice to physically shut off the gas at the valve or gate near the tank, that makes sure no gas gets to the carb when your not using the tractor. Another option is that there might be some foreign material in the carb causing the float to jam that way, suggest remove the carb bowl, its easy enough to remove the carb then the bowl and clean the lot and check the arm for free movement. So it might be any of several causes.

Thanks. At present is will not start, just fills with fuel. I did have the fuel shut off and wonder if some debris simply pushed down into the carb. Anyway, I will check the floats and see what I find.

Ken , My TO20 use to flood. I set the carb float level several time ,no help. every time I forgot to turn the fuel off it flooded, and since I can't remember anything it flooded a lot.so I bought an electric fuel shut off from redrock mfg no problems any more.

Probably just 'flooded.' Rap the side of the carb with a dead blow hammer or something to deliver a blow without danger of cracking the case. Often this will unstick the float. If not, you may need to remove the carb and clean it, but before I would do that I would make sure I had good spark when cranking. Check for a blue spark at a plug and if you have that then address the carb issue.

Better check the oil as that's were it goes once the air filter is full. Probably just debris under the needle, maybe pull the plugs and spin it over plus dry them off then re install, turn on gas, wait a minute and crank.

It is possibly the Needle Valve above the Float that is sticking or the Float could be punctured and has fuel inside it and is now too heavy to float. You need to remove the Carburettor and check these parts and replace if necessary. You should also check just how high the fuel is rising in the carburettor before it is shut off by the float, it does look as though it isn't shutting off. If this is the problem and even if you shut the tap off each time you stop the engine, because of this problem it will always have the fuel level in the Carb higher than it should be and it will use more fuel.Even if you weaken the mixture to try to allow for this extra fuel, you will not be able to compensate for this, it will always be slightly out and never correct as it should be. If you want info about the carburettor and setting it, email me and I will send it....John(UK)[email protected]

Thanks to all. The floats appear to be the culprit. A few taps on the carb. and the TO fired up. I ran it a bit and shut it off.

I returned a few hours later and no problems starting. I did notice after it runs a bit, and I power down to idle it will sputter a bit and blow black smoke then smooth out as I open the throttle. Is that just old fuel?
