I concur, live PTO only if equipped with dual clutch.
There are letters on the serial number plate before the serial number which will tell you if it has it or not.

First letter indicates type of tractor:
S-Standard/Utility Chassis
C-High Clearance/High Arch
R-Row Crop Dual Wheel
T-Row Crop Single Wheel
J-Industrial/Multi Purpose
V-Vineyard

Second Letter indicates engine type:
G-Gasoline
H-High Altitude Gasoline
B-LP
D-Standard Diesel
N-Perkins Diesel
K-TVO
L-Lamp Oil

Third and/or following letter indicates options
F-Single Stage Clutch
M-Dual Stage Clutch (live PTO)
Y-Differential Lock
W-Multi-Power

So my 1959 TO-35 with standard chassis, gasoline engine and dual clutch has SGM before the serial number.

Inno, he said he had a 1955 they did not put the prefix letters on them, they started with the prefix letters at the same time they started using the Bamboo Beige in May of 1956 so the very early 1956s did not have the prefix letters either.

I believe Richard is correct. Lots of times you hear people say having the tach means it is a deluxe and thus live power, or having the deluxe seat means it is a deluxe and thus live power, etc. None of those are good indicators. Only the two stage clutch is a good indicator. And even for the later ones with an 'm' they could be single stage clutch if someone replaced the tag or the dash and didn't swap the tag.

Inno, I was not trying to put you down because that is not what this forum is for. It is to help everyone to try to know what is correct or how to do something, all I can do sometimes is "try" as I am a long way from an expert. I have been corrected occasionally and that is one way I can learn, hopefully. LOL

2 I believe the way you are thinking you are sorta correct. You can't have a two stage clutch without live power and you can't have live power without the two stage clutch. They do go hand in hand, however the clutch is the clutch and the hydraulics are the hydraulics. I believe this is one of those items that it depends on how exactly precise a person wants to say it.

I didn't take it as a put down at all, I'd hate for people to think I'm spreading bad information. No worries. :)

how bout this way:
a two stage clutch gives the tractor live pto but a pto cannot give the tractor a two stage clutch ???

No they don't. Tachometers were optional or could be purchased later and fitted, so ignore that. Check the feel of the pedal, you will feel two definite stages on the clutch pedal if it is livedrive.....John(UK)[email protected]

It may not be written in stone... but I believe 2 (7) tractors has a good hunch here. The ...cheap? and industrials I ran into over the years seem to have a two position PTO lever. They never have a 'ground' postion, and usually the plate is worded 'engine' for live/2 stage models, and 'transmission' for the one disc models.... I think... and so does 2... now I wish I took more pictures of people's stuff.

I have a standard TO-35 serial No. S169xxx. I think mine is an early 1956?? Not a live PTO. Looks like orginal colors were green/gray.
