Just rebuilt a TO30 engine, carb, dist. new battery, I can't get it to start with battery. Pull 3 feet and it starts, but not with using battery, even while battery charger is connected. Seems to be turning fast enough. Any ideas. Any help appreciated.

Sounds as if John is going to win the cigar. If your wiring was off, it wouldn't start no mater how the flywheel turned...but since it would rather start by turning the rear wheels than the starter motor... your bearings are still a little too tight. Next time you start it, let her run a while, no hard jobs, but don't just turn it off... and that might make re-starting even worse!

If you have only just o/h the engine it may be tight and you may find that a little work will help to loosen it. Have you moved the ground lead from the back of the dash panel, attach it to one of the bolts close to the Starter. If you are using 6 volts, then make sure that you use the heavier cable for the starter and ground (Gage 0) not the thin cable like a 12 volt.Have you looked internally at the Starter, is it burnt or the brushes worn?...John(UK)...ferusontractors@hotmail.com

12V or 6V? Resistor bypass? Ign key to start or the shifter handle?

The wife"s TO-20 has the shift handle hooked to a Ford starter solenoid.

Your"s?

Have you checked the spark? Is the timing and the firing order (1-3-4-2) correct?
