49/20/53/30 11-14-2012 18:53:57 97.95.147.96 Report to Moderator	Just wondering if someone knows if a starter from a TO30 will work on a TE20. Mine on my TE20 is dragging and I have a spare off of a TO30. My other question is every once in awhile my TE20 will lock in first gear. I have to take the shifter off and adjust everything. Its not a bad fix its just a pain in the rear. [Reply]   [No Email]

The tractor sticking in gear, is the Clutch dragging, have you checked the free-play in the pedal measured under the Foot-rest to the top of the pedal arm when you rest your hand on the pedal, the gap should be no more than 3/8" when the tractor is hot. If this is correct then it can be wear in the transmission and it requires the end float on the main shaft checking and re-shimming to give correct pre-load. The 6 volt starters are as discussed, but the V volt starters are very long on the Bendix drive and wont fit, as the hole for the starter in the engine rear mounting and the transmission housing is also different to accommodate the extra long starter. If you want to change the original engine from a 6 volt tractor into what was a 12 volt tractor from new you can't do it easily. You need a 12 volt starter that is similar to the 6 volt but with the mounting that will fit on the rear of the Engine Block. Where we use the 6 volt starter when we convert to 12 volt wont work because of the difference in the Starter mounting on the engine Just to clear up any doubt there could be, you can change a 6 volt tractor engine into a 12 volt tractor if you use the original type (or pattern) of starter and the Flywheel from the 6 volt Engine on the 12 volt engine. The size of the Starter mounting is never given a thought. So if you need to change engines from 6 volt to 12 volt tractor always check the starter mounting and if the transmission housing has provision for the extra long Bendix of the Starter.The Starter on a TEA that has been 12 volts from new, engages the flywheel from the rear not the front like most starters do..John(UK)...fergusontractors@hotmail.com   [Reply]  [No Email]
