two stage clutch

on a TO-35 is it possible to convert a one stage clutch to a two stage clutch?

is it simply a matter of splitting the tractor and dropping in the new clutch or are other modifications required?

thanks.

The two stage clutch conversion entails changing the input shafts at the front of the gearbox complete with the housing and bearings. this means pushing the bottom shaft either back (or pulling it forwards depending on the age of the tractor) to let the large gear drop down enough to let the replacement housing into place. You then need a dual clutch cover and the two plates. Some of the original covers can be built to suit the dual clutch configuration, but it is easier to replace the complete unit. It is do-able, but quite a bit of time and money involved unless you can find secondhand parts of good quality and use your own time.

Different Flywheel, different Transmission layout completely, only way to do it is get another Transmission, Flywheel and Clutch. Not really practical. You could get another Tractor with a Dual Clutch and if you want to keep your Engine then switch it into the new tractor. Not really practical...John(UK)

I have done this conversion using the original gearbox and flywheel, but as John has pointed out sometimes the flywheel is different.

As John and Sam say, it 'can' be done, but, to purchase all the bits and pieces from the rear main bearing to the PTO spline, it most likely would cost more than finding another tractor with a blown engine. Just lately I see people want $600 for a used clutch pack, and others asking $500 for a complete yet dead tractor. Putting the engine you like the least on the back half you like the least makes a nice tractor to sell to someone who just wants to haul firewood...

I've got a parts F-40 with good transmission--duel pressure plate, no clutch.Make offer. I'm in Texas. The PO had busted rock shaft and housing lifting big round bales hay. I used engine in HC F-40 I'm building.I drove tractor before removing engine.
