Hydro/ trans oil for to30

I got GL 1--90wt at NAPA. $49.95--5gal for F40. This is the old type mineral oil not the new GL-5.Can post number tomorrow. Some use 15-45 motor oil.

Multi-grade 10W/30 is the best oil to use, anything with a higher grade than that is no better than the outdated GL1 type oil. Multi-grade is much better in cold conditions as it does not get as thick as the GL1 type. The Multi-grade is a much better oil as it has a higher specification regarding anti-wear properties and you can use it all year around no matter where you are. Hot or cold climates does not make any difference and it was recommended by the suppliers of oil to MF as a direct replacement for the GL1 type which now is outdated for how we use it in these tractors. Anyone in a cold climate will notice a difference straight away, only those in a moderate or tropical climate will not notice much difference until you have to repair the hydraulics or transmission. Hydraulics need a relatively thin oil to operate successfully, thick oil will slow the movement of the Control Valve and when it is really cold it will prevent it operating, but because you are using the same oil in the Transmission, you have to compromise on what oil you do use, Multi-grade is much better all-round. We used Multi-grade in the tractor from when it was introduced in the UK in 1955. Just because it was written in the Operators Book for the Tractor 50 or more years ago, does not mean that you should continue to use the GL1 type when there is something much better available. I guess I will try the 10w30 motor oil. It is easily found. John(uk) you did mean 10w30 motor oil correct? Any thoughts on the UTF. I find that in a lot of stores around here. Thanks

My dip stick is missing and some one put a big nail in the dipstick hole. I going to order one. My question is do yall know how much to fill the trans fluid by sight. I seems very easy to look down in the fill hole behide the gear stick. Should I fill to cover all the moving parts I see in there or all the way to the top. Thanks

From empty the transmission takes 6 US gallons. To find level if you have no dipstick, remove bottom screw on one of round side covers and add 5 gallons and then add a little bit more if necessary until the oil runs out of the stud hole. The level will be slightly down on the normal level but it can be a good thing as it will often prevent any oil running through the seals onto the brakes. When you add the oil, only add 2 gallons at a time and then leave it for 15 mins before you add any more or the level may get too high in the Transmission and it could run into the Clutch Housing if the seal is worn on the main drive shaft into the Transmission from the Clutch.you need to allow some time for it to settle as there is a baffle built into the housings to prevent oil surge when the tractor is working on hillsides or the oil would all run to one end. Use Multi-grade 10W/30 oil...John(UK)[email protected]
