Don TX. Maybe check the the rest of the flywheel for possible factory timing marks. Maybe the chisel marks u found were made by a previous owner. Most likely any home made marks on the flywheel would have been made at the 6'Oclock position of the flywheel while the factory marks (if any) would then be at the 3 o'clock position of the flywheel.
Or to put it another way:
Place chisel marks at 6'Oclock position, then turn flywheel clockwise 90 degrees to see if factory marks appear. Of course that assumes the flywheel is still mounted to the engine like mine is.
