A-BO-22 Disc

I have acquired an A-BO-22 Disc Harrow along with a 3 point, 2 bottom plow which along with a 1955 TO35, all owned by my grandfather. I am in the process of fixing up the disc. The bearings all appear to be in very good shape and have been able to find some square head bolts to repair the bearing housings. Having downloaded the manuals and parts diagrams I have 2 basic questions.

1. The disc diameters are around 14.5 inches, both the rear smooth and front notched disc. The manuals state 2 sizes available 16 and 18 inch. The 2 center front notched discs are split and I want to replace all 12. Seems like 16 inch would be appropriate. Any reason to look at 18 inch?

2. The downloaded manual states not to run the disc without the scrapers or excess bearing wear will occur. I have scrapers but they only have 4 per gang and are missing 2. I have been unable to locate replacement parts. Admittedly I cannot imagine doing anymore than an acre at a time and they were not mounted when I picked it up. Is there any problem not installing, or at best does anyone know where you can buy replacements?

Don't forget that disc was probably given a Massey-Ferguson model number. So a 14A-AO-28 plow would become a Massey-Ferguson 62 plow.

I think on link_disallowed or FENA there is a conversion chart.

For anyone interested...this is a rare disc over in N. Ireland as it is only 5ft wide. Most of our discs were 6 ft or 7 ft...

The 16" is already worn out, the 18" will cut better, also deeper and pull easier for the depth of cut you are getting. At the time they were made some thought that the 18" would pull harder so they would only buy the one with 16" blades but that has been proven wrong. Also the 16" was cheaper so they went for inital price, not thinking they would have to replace the blades twice over the same acres the 18" would last that had a higher inital cost but cheaper in the end to operate. The extra couple of dollars per blade will be well worth it. Just think that the 16" blades are only around anymore for replacement of an 18" that is wore to 17" and got busted. Slightly smaller is better than slightly larger in that case.

Leroy,

Thank you, that's exactly the information I was looking for. Seeing I only paid $350 for the disc and the 2 bottom plow, both in very good shape, I can afford to spend the extra for the 18" blades.

Note that there are two extra holes for the 3 point Mounting Pins, one set of holes allows the Disc's to transfer the weight of the harrow to the tractor and control the depth with the hydraulics....John(UK)[email protected]
