Overheating TE 20

Now that I have this running it overheats. Not over filled, plugs aren't steam cleaned, runs at idle for 5 mins and starts puking. New water pump, thermostat, hoses and radiator was cleaned and pressure checked. Blown head gasket? Infrared thermometer shows top of rad is running @ 190*, bottom is @ 90*.

Before going too far....did you check your new thermostat before fitting? sometimes they are duds. boil up some water and put the 'stat in it and watch it opening ...or not
Could be a blown gasket, but the bubbles would start even when turning the starter and the water cold.

It's opening and circulating. Builds up pressure and pukes. I put a 18# rad cap and the rad started popping the dents out of the top tank. Scared me. The 7# cap just pukes. after warm up, I can watch the circulation with rad cap removed and it's not a smooth circulation kinda irradic.

Did you drill a 1/8 hole in thermostat? What thermost did you use 160--190? You could have overfilled, let it run and see if it stop's blowing water out.I have had same problem and it stop's after it runs awhile.Water has to expand when heated. Just my 2 cents worth.

The flow should not be erratic when the thermostat is open. The radiator should only be filled to about 1/4 " over the top of the core.

Is the belt slipping? Are you sure the thermostat is ok? Is the lower hose collapsing when you rev it up?

The lower hose isn't collapsing. Water is just above the core. I need to check the belt. It wasn't squealing but may not be as tight as possible. Thanks for the idea.

From how you describe it, it does seem like a blown head gasket, it is pressurizing anyway, it could be a cracked head too. I would remove the Head and carefully check the gasket to see if you can see where it is blowing, keep your fingers off the face of the gasket so that you won't destroy any evidence, if you can't see a leak perhaps we can if you post a picture of the gasket, both sides...John(UK)[email protected]

is this a in the hose thermostat like a to-20?
if so take out stat and put hose back on and see what happens.

I ran a hose in the top and watched the flow out of the bottom before I hooked up the hoses. I was satisfied the flow was sufficient. It didn't fill up and overflow. I expected the lower temps at the lower part due to the design of the rad. That's what they're supposed to do.

Yes it is in the upper hose. I will take you're advise to see what happens. Thanks.

Yeah, I thought it might be the head but I'm holding my breath it is the gasket. A cracked block would probly be other symptoms but I'm praying it isn't the block. I haven't drained the oil yet. I haven't put antifreeze in the water yet til I'm satisfied I won't have to drain the rad again.
