After stripping the top end and other parts of my 55 TEA20 I realised that all the threads I"ve come across are Unified.
In the fifties Whitworth was still quite common, in fact it is still used today.
I think UK was wholly Unified in the seventies, in fact are"nt you supposed to be all metric now?

Now was Harry looking ahead knowing that Whitworth was going or, maybe the real reason, he thought USA would be the biggest buyer of his stuff.

What ever, it is so nice to be able to go down to engineering suppliers and be able to buy over the counter all the nuts and bolts.
Mind you I went to one supplier a few years ago and was able to buy all different sizes of Whitworth bolts for a project I was working on.
I was quite surprised at how available, in a metric country, they were.

All our threads and sizes are now metric as you thought. Possible reason that HF used unified threads was that he was used to them from manufacturing in the US before he moved to manufacturing to the UK. The Engine was not made by Ferguson, it was made by Standard Motors who also made the tractors for Ferguson. It was developed in conjunction with Continental who would have unified threads, so maybe that is the connection. But we did use a lot of unified threads and the older styles whitworth and BSF etc were being phased out anyway..John(UK)[email protected]
