TO30 Project

Hey Yall

I started to restore my great grandfathers TO30 a few months ago. I pulled it out of the pines and took it to a friend of the family. He did all his health would allow him to do to get her running again but now shes in my hands. He told me I needed a valve job most likely and that it was overheating after running 15min or so stitting still.

So, I have removed the head. I am going to take that to a machine shop to get a vavle job. I have inspected the block and the cyclinder walls dont seem to be cracked(that I can see). I have the water pump off. I figure might as well change it while im on there.

I cant find a theromstat. I understand it is the the hose going from head to radiator. Is that right? Is it ok not to have one?

I think the head gasket might have been blown but not sure.

There was a clogged hole comeing from the water pump to the head. I have cleaned that out. Perhaps this was heating it up.

Any thought or sugestions about the project would be great. Thanks

You should never run without a thermostat or the engine will always be too cold and the oil will form sludge and then it won't lubricate the Engine properly and it will block all the galleries. There should be a hole between the Water Pump and the Head through the gasket, this helps the engine to keep the water flowing so it wont heat up in hot spots around the sleeves when the thermostat is closed..John(UK)[email protected]

I may be wrong, but. if there is one, it could be in one of two places: actually in the rubber radiator hose between the head and the radiator OR mounted inside the cast neck that the radiator hose is attached to. Similar to most car engines. -i could be wrong, but just trying to help.mark

to reply to my own reply (does that make sense?)
I looked up the thermostat for the TO 30 and the TO 35 respectively; the TO 30 thermostat is the type that slips INTO the actual hose....so what I said was 1/2 correct. The TO 35 (which is what I am more familiar with) type of thermostat is the type that mounts between the "neck" and the head. sorry about that.
If you'd like to see what your looks like, go to the left column of this site and "click" "tractor parts" and fill correct information. Then go to the "cooling" choice and scroll down and there is a photo of the TO 30 thermostat.

Thanks for the info. I have looked the hoses up and down as well as the pump and head conections and not seen a thing. That makes sense it would be in the hose. Its just missing. I fits in the hose going from the head to the top of the radiator correct? When I have searched in the past two types of thermostat show up. It must be the bigger bullet shaped thermo.

Also I was looking at the water pump housing and noticed a thin spot at the bottom where the water goes into the block. Looks like perhaps at one time the pumps rubbed it. Has anybody seen this? Should I replace it? I dont want the hole to be too big and the pump not be able to creat the right amount of pressure it needs to cool. Thoughts?
