Is it a TO or TE Tractor

My neighbor bought a Ferguson tractor that was painted fairly recently and wants to know what he has! It has TO3551 on the dash below the steering wheel, Z120A600 on the engine, but has TE 20 on the decal on the hood. It has the oil filter going to the oil pan and the distributor cap has "made in england" printed on it. The distributor looks like any other with the wires just inserted into it. It has D21 spark plugs which are larger than the usual 13/16 wrench size and a reach of about 1/2 inch.
I have not seen the tractor myself but reading through comments on this board, I am confused. What can you Ferguson Guru"s tell us about this tractor????

Could be either, it sounds like a mix-up of parts. Have a look at the steering box mounting, is it combined with the the Gearbox top cover, if it is, it's a TE20 from the UK, if it is separate and in two parts, it is a TO20. There are other differences but that is the easiest way for you to check.....John(UK)[email protected]

Regardng John's reply ....The top pic is a TO steering box and the bottom pic is a TE steering box.
Hope that helps....

I will have him check but it sounds like it is a TO since he did say the gearbox cover is held on by 8 bolts like the photo shown here.
I am still confused though because I read somewhere that if the oil filter went into the oil pan it is a TE! Also why is the distributor cap marked "made in England". Also what do the Z2120A markings mean on the engine and where is the serial number located anyway?
Thanks for the replies....this website is great! I have about 20 tractors I have collected through the years since retiring but no Fergusons. I think it is a good hobby and there are several folks around here that are collecting them. I hope external_link does not start a cash for clunkers program for old tractors!!!!!

Both the TE and the TO 20 has the oil filter in the pan. Z 120 means it is a Z 120 engine block the 120 is the cubic inches of the engine. The serial number is on TOP of the dash between the steering column and the hood, about a 3-1/4 inch by 4-1/2 inch aluminum tag. I have no answer why the cap says made in England.

Now, he tells me it has an aluminum gearbox with a flat plate with 8 bolts holding the shifter on. He has not found the serial number plate yet but will re check.
Now he found the distributor with the cap "made in england" does have threads in the holes but no parts that thread into them! The wires are just stuck in the holes. So this sounds like a TE20 distributor and the aluminum gearbox tells me that it is a TE20 tractor from your information. I imagine it is impossible to find the threaded nuts that go into the distributor or even the points since they are English. The cap itself looks new he says. He thinks he could solder metal discs on the wires if he could find the plastic nuts to hold them tight. Any ideas where he could get or make these parts?

The 'nuts'as you call them for holding in the HT leads should be available from Sparex....We call them 'acorns' If not I might be able to post you some.

You are describing a te20. with the aluminum transmission case and the lucas distributor. It's possible that parts have been swapped, but the to20 has delco electrical parts ( distributor, generator, and starter), and the te20 has lucas electrical parts.

I looked at Sparex but they only deal with dealers it seems and no prices are shown on their website. How do you find dealers of Sparex?
