generator/ regulator

MY 48 TE20
6 volt system
So the generator is in , Indicator light goes off at higher idle.
However don't show a significant charge at the battery and if I disconnect a terminal the tractor dies which says no charge.
Has the lucas regulator.
Does this indicate regulator issues.? Will the Delco TO 20 regulator work on this system?
Any wiring changes required or hook it up in the same way.

Thanks again as always.

Since it is Lucas someone else needs to verify this:

Disconnect FIELD wire from generator. Connect a seperate wire to the field post of generator and ground the other end of same wire to engine block or generator housing. That should give wide open generator out put if the generator is good. My To-20 has been running that way for 18 years with no problems. NOT the way it SHOULD be but it DOES work. It"s a good test procedure for generator. Most one wire alternator systems work the same way.

It is most likely the Regulator, but you can test the Generator, by removing wiring from Generator, remove Fan Belt. You can buy a Lucas Regulator from this site if needed. Fit a wire between large terminal on Generator to battery, fit a wire between the small terminal on Generator to ground. If the Generator is good it will start to spin like a motor, if it doesn't spin it needs changing. A Delco Regulator will need rewiring ...John(UK)[email protected]

Thanks to you both.
Wil give it a try John. Let you know the result.
Also dropped an inquirery as to a new regulator with the parts people.
.

John if I need to get a Delco regulator what would be required as re wiring ? will be double checking the generator shortly.
Keep you posted . thanks again.
