TO 35 Govenor

Recently bought a really sharp TO 35. Has Govenor issues. Kinda works but very sluggish. One problem is I'm missing Compensating spring link. No longer available. Does any one out there have one I mite buy? Also does anyone have a clear directions on how to adjust this linkage when I find one? To nice a Machine not to run properly. Any help would be really appreciated.
 
John UK has instructions on how to set up the governor. I'm not sure if it is correct but my compensation spring on my 202 (same engine) was missing and I just used one I had around the shop. I'm not sure the exact function of it or how important it is. Once I adjusted as per John's instructions it seemed to work pretty well.
Just bought a TO-35 last weekend and it needs some governor work too.
One of the biggest things is making sure that everything operates easily and smoothly (no binding) and there is minimal wear of all the moving parts. It needs to be tight but loose if that makes sense.
If I find the instructions before John comes on I will try to post them. For some reason I haven't been able to find them. They might be on a memory stick I took to work.
 
I hesitate to jump in here but I think I know this one... The only purpose of the comp. spring & link is to balance forces w/ the governor control spring so that the throttle lever will stay put where you set it. i.e. w/o the comp spring the throttle lever would return to idle pos. when you release it. The comp. spring does not affect the function of the gov. Only the throttle. Hope I don't get beat up to badly on this one.
 
You may well be right. On my 202 the hand throttle has little indents which hold it in place, not sure if that was original or not, doesn't look like it. On the TO-35 it uses the friction plate etc. that is supposed to hold the lever in place and perhaps the comp. spring plays a part in that.
 
The governor will never work unless the compensating spring and link is fitted. Both springs must be in good condition and not stretched or rusted or they will be weak, same applies to the one on the vertical rod, they are available. Governor will not operate correctly if there is anything wrong with the springs.
This could be part of the cause of sluggish operation, but the usual error is the Bumper Spring has been adjusted incorrectly and too much pressure has been applied.I have the dimensions of the Compensating link and the information about how to adjust the Governor correctly. Because the Governor is not operating correctly, never presume that it is the Governor, it is almost always adjustment of the linkage, no matter what tractor model you have.
When you took off the Timing Cover did you replace the oil seal and gasket as they often leak when they have been disturbed. If you need the setting information for the Governor and the compensating spring link, email me direct and I will send it to you....John(UK)[email protected]
 
The throttle notched plate is standard on this tractor and it will still have the friction Disc. They used both because of the vibration on these industrial tractors and they needed to be fixed with little chance of them closing down as often the tractor was left to run unattended or the operator was perched up on a Rear Digger and couldn't reach the throttle easily.The compensating spring is aways fitted as it is part of he Governor linkage on a gas engine..John(UK)
