Either way will work. Start in the center and work your way out evenly. Coat the head gasket with a fine film of wheel bearing grease. Torque the head down in three stages and if your concerned about not missing any bolts in the proces, do each stage twice. Now if your lucky enough to have to remove the head in the next few days, you will find that wheel bearing grease or cup grease as the manual refers to it as, has glued the head gasket in place better than any glue ever will. Grease allows it to slide around during installation. Then the greasde acts as the best sealant one step short of cement. I had to remove mine before I fired the engine and the gasket tore itself in 1/2. What fun! Scraping gasket from the head and the block!

I"m a Gunsmith, so Prints and Pictures Mean things. If something isn"t correct, then I have to figure out what is. John from UK answered my question as to it being a Correct Sequence, but I corrected the Picture to remove any doubt. I figured Misleading or Misprinted Info should be corrected.

i have a pre 64 mod 70 .243 that had the breech bolt stolen from it at the local gun club. (long crappy story)

any chance of finding a replacement anywhere's?

numrich does not have it.

 Problem #1) Getting a Bolt #2 is Proper Headspace. in reply to s19438, 09-18-2012 10:36:41  
Locating the Bolt will be the hardest part. Granted, as a "Pre 64" gun, you would want to retain it"s collectibility, but the Firearm could have a "Newer" Bolt installed, but it would need a Cone Breach conversion done to the Barrel. The Pre-64 models had a Sloped Front on the Bolt. The newer models don"t have that. To make up the area and to Headspace it correctly, it would need this done. Sorry for the Bad news. Keep Looking for that bolt.
